What Does "GRA Certified" Mean for Moissanite? A Buyer's Guide

What does GRA certified mean for moissanite, a buyer's guide from Paradise Gems Atlanta

If you've been shopping for moissanite jewelry, you've probably seen the phrase "GRA certified" on almost every listing. Here's what it actually means, and what it doesn't.

What Is GRA?

GRA stands for Gemological Research Association. GRA labs grade and document moissanite gemstones — recording carat weight, cut grade, color grade, clarity, and proportions — and issue a certificate for the stone.

What GRA certification confirms: the stone is genuine lab-grown moissanite (not cubic zirconia or another simulant), and its specific measurements and quality grade.

What it doesn't do: GRA is not the same organization as GIA (Gemological Institute of America), which grades diamonds. GRA certification isn't a diamond appraisal, and it doesn't set resale value the way a diamond grading report does. Any seller implying otherwise isn't being straight with you.

Why This Matters When You're Buying

A GRA certificate is your assurance of exactly what you're getting: the carat weight, cut, color, and clarity you're paying for, in writing. It protects you from vague listings that describe a stone as simply "moissanite" with no specifics behind it.

Every Paradise Gems Stone Ships with Real GRA Certification

At Paradise Gems Atlanta, every piece we sell is GRA-certified VVS clarity, D color — the highest color grade on the scale, meaning colorless with no visible tint. Every certificate comes directly with your piece as part of your purchase.

We also invite you to see and handle our GRA-certified pieces in person at our showroom inside Americas Mart, 250 Spring Street NW, Atlanta — no appointment needed to come look, ask questions, and see the quality for yourself before you decide.

Bottom Line

GRA certification is a real, useful record of what you're buying — cut, color, clarity, and carat. It's not a diamond appraisal, and any seller telling you it is deserves a second look. Buy from a jeweler who's transparent about what certification does and doesn't mean.
